Hello there everyone..so its been absolutely ages since I posted on here! I have been dabbling in many things...first up thr33designs is now joining forces with 3dglasses to become WeThreeClub! our site is just being made at the moment but for now check out our holding page showing the various works we have done recently

a new exhibition has opened for a week in cambridge town centre (at the old fired earth shop, near cult clothing) raising money for the red cross...
established illustrators/artists/designers and students/graduates have donated one or more piece of work for the show.
for the duration of the show (3rd-9th of May) the work is subject to a secret auction, where the people who want to buy the work write down their contact details and the amount they want to pay, the winning bid recives the work and all the money is donated to the Red Cross.

this is my canvas for the show..go down and check it all out! there are some lovely things there..

hello there. so things are all a bit hectic right now. i have so much work and such little time..but recently i have been asked to be a part of another gallows tour poster series...there are some really fantastic artists doing a poster for each show..they will all be screen printed and available at the shows and also sold in my little shop.

so the lovely people at art is proof press have asked me to take part in a little exhibition being organised in conjunction with banquet records.it will consist of a series of a2 black and gold screen prints on the theme of fear. the gallery of choice is the toilet gallery in kingston and it is aid of the charity carousel. the opening night is on april 8th and it will run until may 1st..there are some great artists involved so you should probably go..i will remind you all about it nearer the time im sure..here is what i have done for said show..it will obviously be gold on black...

the weekend just gone i put on cambridges first poster roast..as exhausting as it was organising it all, it was a great success! the talented mr chris white joined me throughout the whole event, and then we were graced by more talent in the form of mr drew millward, mr luke drozd and mr cameron steward. it was a pleasure to meet them all in the flesh! lovely chaps.

then on sunday i put on my first show at the shop, which consisted of tellison, the tupolev ghost and pennines playing wonderful music..if you missed any of this, you missed out..

hello there you. so a few things to update...howies have just released their spring catalogue and my t-shirts are within it..here they are:

in other news next week is THE CAMBRIDGE POSTER ROAST. im so excited. here is the poster of the events over the 4 days..

im really pleased to have some great artists exhibiting, drew millward, cameron steward, chris white, luke drozd, dan reeves and many others..

i will have some a2 posters for sale, and i know that a lot of other posters shall be available too..so come along with some pennies to spend!

on the sunday night there is also going to be a really spectacular gig, starting at 7.30 with norwichs pennines, then local band the tupolev ghost, followed by the terrific tellison. five pounds on the door..you would be a fool to miss it..

hello hello.
so i have a few things to talk about..firstly i did this little logo thing for a boy who makes music..

then secondly the lovely people of the district have asked me to become part of their team..which is very exciting..at first i shall be helping promote their little exhibition space called the frontroom, by updating the blog/marketing/getting drunk...they are such a great bunch so im really happy to of found them within the quite straight laced cambridge design 'scene'. winners.

thirdly the lovely chaps at howies have decided to use my two t-shirt designs i posted up here a while ago. it will be in their spring catalogue, so keep an eye out for that!

Im organising the first poster roast in cambridge. its exciting. i am definitely looking forward to it. here is the information. you should probably come along.

POSTER ROAST- Cambridge
20th – 23rd February 2009
Friday 20th : open - 11am- 5pm / private view – 7pm-9pm
Saturday 21st : open – 11am – 5pm / talks 2pm onwards
Sunday 22nd : open 11am – 4pm / Gig 7.30pm – 10.30pm
Monday 23rd : open 11am – 5pm

Gig posters, although often overlooked, still play a huge role in the everyday promotion of music. They are now seen to be making resurgence as the antithesis of today's throwaway society. It is becoming increasingly more popular to make something of these one off pieces of design, with limited, hand numbered screen prints appealing to the collector nerds and obsessive fans who strive to seek something unique and original.

The first Poster Roast to be held in Cambridge aims to bring together some of the very best UK illustrators and designers in the realm of Gig Posters, it is being curated by local illustrator/designer Alex Curtis who runs Thr33 Designs from her house on Mill Road.

The artists exhibiting are Drew Millward, Chris White (3dglasses), Luke Drozd, Graham Pilling, Dan Reeves (fake french), Cameron Steward (twoducksdisco), Glyn Scrawled, and Alex Curtis (thr33designs).

The exhibition is to be held over 4 days at The Shop on Jesus Lane, a community art space which is becoming increasingly well known throughout Cambridge for providing a much needed and central arts venue. The exhibition opens on Friday 20th February and closes on Monday 23rd.

On Saturday 21st, from 2pm the artists Cameron Steward, Drew Millward and Chris White will be sharing experiences and talking about their work, giving a great insight into working as a freelance designer/illustrator. And on Sunday 22nd there will be a gig in the evening featuring bands that have their posters featured within in the exhibition.

hello there. so a boy wrote some words about me and interviewed me and other people and things..this is his online zine: button thief..but here is the article anyway..(i didnt do costume at uni)..

Thr33 is a magic number

Many of us would claim our dream job would involve one of our hobbies, but two! Isn’t that just greedy? Alex Curtis is one woman who could argue with that.

Any fans of the Luke Leighfield/ Dartz!/ Tellison school of indie rock can’t help but have seen a very distinct style of art being used in their favourite bands flyers, posters and album covers. This quirky brand of simple sketched lines holding in pastel colours is the distinct style of Thr33 designs, the work of Cambridge artist Alex Curtis: The woman behind the art for a whole host of magazines, events as well as bands right across the genres. While Alex is involved in photography, make up and costume design she is probably best known for her off kilter drawings. “I’ve been drawing pretty much all my life. Both my parents were artists, and my dad had a studio in the house that I used to create a bunch of mess in. I can’t remember not drawing!” While Alex has had no formal drawing tuition, opting to focus on costume at university, it has allowed her to develop her own style. “I think my stuff usually has a surreal dark edge, but I tend to use quite bright, vibrant colours.” The walls of her stuffy Cambridge studio are layered with scratchy sketches peppered with the occasional photo, as CD stacks rise out of the floor representing her other love, music. “I’ve always been a fan of music and that’s really how I’ve ended up where I am. I get to do both, which works really well.”

Working on a freelance basis means Alex’s regular clients are essential to her business. “I love working for new people but I have done a lot of work with the bands Tellison and Chillerton, and I design the posters for a monthly short film night in Cambridge. The only time that I really ever turn down work is when people expect me to work for free, unfortunately like everyone else I need to eat and pay bills! ”
Henry from Tellison explains why he is so keen on Alex’s designs. “A lot of art that is used in our "scene" is rather cutesy and sweet and is often very polished and ‘photoshopped’ but Alex's has a real raw and rough feel which I like allot. She did this great T-Shirt for us of a horse with an arm coming out of its mouth holding a keyboard. It sounds a bit surreal and weird but it worked really well. She's just really good at composing and crafting images that you wouldn't expect or hadn't associated with the subject she's designing for.” Bailey from South coast band Chillerton agrees: “We have always liked Alex’s work for us and other bands, she has a very cool style that is both detailed and fun to look at. Alex always seems to have ideas and a real passion for what she does.”
"I find it really hard to keep concentration on something for ages. I’m not a perfectionist!"

Working within such a web of bands means that Alex’s art is always on display, and being involved in promotion means every time a poster or flyer is made it’s another advert for her work. “Myspace is the main source of people contacting me. Bands and artists are very much benefiting from using it. Usually I get work when a band emails me about a flyer or poster and I’ll draw them something.” Alex seems keen to accommodate most bands needs: “Often the bands I work with will have great ideas but a small budget, so we'll talk things over and if I can I will work something out with them. First I try to arrange what a band is looking for and I will see how to achieve it. It is a lot of trial and error. I find it really hard to keep concentration on something for ages. I’m not a perfectionist, hence why the majority of my work is very simple.” Henry from Tellison praises her efficiency: “Alex is really easy to work with and pretty quick at getting sketches and ideas back to us. Which is real useful. There is nothing worse than having to wait ages to see what things look like. She is someone who you can trust to come up with original ideas and designs. She interprets the ideas you put forward in weird but wonderful way.”

Alex name checks Pablo Picasso as a big influence on her work: “I love how he regressed back to trying to draw like a child. Also I think Quentin Blake has had some influence on my unconsciousness: I read quite a lot of Roald Dahl as a child. Aside from other artists everyday emotions and music, especially when it’s for the band are influences, there’s no specific thing every time though.”

Despite music being so closely linked with her work Alex still notes the importance of it as a fan “I have quite a diverse musical taste. My favourite bands are probably Les Savy Fav and Queen.I don’t know what that says about me? But other stuff I’m listening to right now is Algernon Cadwallader, Lemuria, Fleet Foxes, Sam Cooke, Iron Chic, Two Gallants, and Beirut.”

It seems Alex is experiencing the best of both worlds, but where does the hobby end and work begin? “I’m one of those people who can integrate their hobby and not find it a problem, in fact I a great job. Sometimes if I really want to do stuff for a band I will hassle them, but I probably don’t do that enough.” So what can we expect next from Thr33? “I have a few things lined up as always, I think that one of the downsides of working freelance is that it is my only income so there are times that I am ridiculously busy and other times where I am less so.” The unfinished drawings on her desk, patiently waiting for her to finish talking to me, suggest she is doing just fine.

hello there. so i have done a few little things that i will post with this little post. a new chillerton t-shirt design which was done for the fest 7 in gainesville florida, and then a little poster for a gig in cambridge. i hope you like them.

in more news i am organising a poster roast in cambridge in february..more on that soon..also in january i will be setting up camp in the frontroom of the district..they are letting me basically doodle all over the walls, windows, floor, doors for a month, then it will be shown to the public for a month after that! exciting..more on that to come soon too im sure..

so this week has been the Cambridge film festival. i have been working at it..which, as always, has been fun. i have watched a large amount of films..including this little number:

its really great! i recommend you go see it when it is released in the cinema..thats my little tip for the day...ive been busy with film festival things..but more drawing shenanigans to come soon!

hello there. so i have been busy writing out lots of words. words for ARU, and words for the cambridge film festival. maybe ill have a sneaky preview of ARU words soon..but here are the words i was doing for CFF. they were to show what was on each day of the festival..due to be printed as posters to cover the chalk boards that we normally write on everyday in the cinema..but they have been deemed to "arty"..so are no longer needed..luckily i had so much time on my hands that i was quite happy to spend hours writing endless film titles and numbers out..(hmm) so anyway..here one is (above)..sorry this is a bit of a venting post..

The EP's artwork is also pretty special, who was behind that?

Gaz: That comes straight from the "twisted" mind of Alex Curtis of Thr33 Designs. I remember searching desperately for an artist who would come up with a slightly surreal looking design instead of the usual Photoshop dark forest type thing and she sent us a link of her portfolio and it included the cover for Gallows' Orchestra Of Wolves and Tellison's Contact so we'd have been pretty dumb to miss an opportunity like that.

The artwork she sent us utterly exceeded our expectations, especially since she hand drew it within a matter of days of hearing the EP.

well i thought i should actually write something..a proper update..

so i have just completed a bunch of work..most can be seen below..the mono effects album is shortly going to print..which is exciting! i am also completing the kimaira album artwork soon..so that should be up for everyones eyes to have a look at..im working on a poster for a ghost mice show in london, which is great, as they are ace, and im looking forward to drawing out a bunch of mice!!

ive just applied for a studio in cambridge, at the cambridge artworks, which is a co-op run building full of studios to rent for cheap...i have to wait and see if they want me, before i know if im moving there, but i hope i get one! i think it will really benefit my work..im going to go on a screen printing frenzy if i get the space, and they have a kiln there!! which means i can fire stuff and do more prosthetic makeup work..

in terms of makeup i have just finished working on a film with children from a school in norwich..making them look like they are from the 40's..it was tiring but great fun! some of the locations and costumes we found were so lovely..i also worked on another foals music video last week..it was for the single olympic airways..and i am actually in the video, which i am kind of regretting now, as i was up at 5am that morning!! clearly in no state to be filmed..but nevermind! it should be amusing..i had to body paint them, and all the designs i had worked on were then changed last minute..so it was pretty improvised! non the less it all came together..i should have some photos to put up soon!

hello there!
so here are a couple of album covers i have recently been working on for your viewing pleasure.
a cover i did a while a go for tellisons single 'gallery' has been chosen to be a part of an exhibition called 'spin' which will be held at the university of the arts london, showing album covers spanning over 4 decades..it sounds amazing! the winning entries were chosen by three judges, peter saville (famous joy division cover etc..) editor of gq magazine, and some guy from the horrors (comedy). so yeh should be great..it will run from 1 - 26th september. anyway. here are the new covers! enjoy.

in other news i am still trying to finish off the last ever howards alias album artwork which should be great, i have just finished the new lindas nephew ep, and will post up the artwork on here extremely soon!! i am doing an album for a band from finland called kimaira which should also be a lot of fun, and another local band called the mono effect have just asked me to do their upcoming album, so its all go!! thankfully i can sit out and enjoy the sun, whilst slaving away at my laptop! thank you all for watching..if anyone does? send me words. they are always fun. thank you.

i have been working on a few makeup things recently. i just thought i would get this blog up to date with those things. i did a trailer for a horrof film which will be shot in the summer. photos and link below. i also did a 4 hour stop frame makeup of a guy aging for sean redmonds new music video, which will hopefully be out at the end of this month!!
